Good Morning or Good Evening -whatever your location on our planet,
The Storm
Our area’s forecast is for two weeks of severe cold that this area is not use to — and overall – not prepared for.
Although I’m hoping the power will stay on — with all the ice with snow that is forecast — it most probably will not.
A Little of My Situation
As I’m sure long-time readers have surmised – I’ve not been my best. These past 8 months (or more) have been the hardest of my life.
Not only am I turtle-slow — I can’t walk without support of a walker. The femur bone at the hip slips out of joint after my full weight is on it for a while. Painful – but having the walker’s support gets me through it.
Have not been able to get to my garden since November!! (I usually go everyday of the year unless there is ice.) Thus, for me, this is one of the two things that I find most discouraging.
The second most discouraging thing is not having been able to write for TMG for some time. Loads of information to help you in the coming growing season is still on my list of posts to write.
On the brighter side, I ‘ve been able to reply to the emails of several readers who have written to me for help.
I plan to share a lot of those problems and solutions with everyone as soon as I’m able.
My energy level holds out about 6 to 8 hours and then I have to sleep to regain it. Thus. literally all of my waking hours are consumed with doing the day to day things that keep us alive. (And yes,I’m that slow!)
Abigail in New York
Sadly, I’ve not been able to reply or offer encouragement to a long-time reader and friend, Abigail S. in NY who was scheduled for a knee replacement in November.
Abigail, in spite of that – you’re remembered daily in prayers for your healing and I hope I can learn of your progress soon.
My and Everyone’s Strongest Asset
I have to remind myself that being “down/depressed” (and thus of low frequency) will slow or prevent healing.
A positive approach (high frequency) is one of our strongest and most effective assets when we’re handicapped in some way and wanting and waiting to heal.
And yes — I know it’s easier said than done!
A Heartfelt Thank You and One of the Things You’ve Made Possible
To you who have shared and supported the work I do on TMG to help you make raising food easy, I’m so grateful for your help.
One of the things you’ve made possible is being able to pay for some help that I don’t know how I would have managed without .
The man (now a friend) who has cut my acre of grass in season for the last 8 years — will at least once or twice a month get my mail, take the trash. And has helped keep me alive and warm by keeping my kerosene containers full.
Thanks to you who have helped me, I was able to have the money to take advantage of his offer to help.
(I so regret not being able to do these simple but necessary things myself. But am very grateful that he is willing to do them.)
Heads Up About my Internet
My service provider has changed to 5G and is no longer supporting the DSL service.
I have no intention of subjecting myself to all the health dangers of 5G.
However, I plan to keep this provider until it is totally impossible to get online. Then I will be forced to go with the only one provider that still offers DSL in this area. (I understand they’re not very dependable.)
With the many days of ice that are in the forecast internet will likely be down.
Bottom line — The severe cold is forecast to end about the first week in February. But that’s no indication that my internet will be online then.
So if you email me, or reply to a post via comments — I won’t be able to respond unless I once again have internet.
The storm is suppose to start Saturday evening. So I will probably have internet through Saturday Jan 23 and maybe Sunday and part of Monday, Jan 24 and 25. So your messages or comments will be most welcomed!
Final Thoughts
If you are in the path of this storm I hope you have all you need to take care of yourself and stay warm and fed even without power.
I will be praying for your safety.
Thank you for being the best readers and friends!

Theresa,
Here in NC we are expecting an ice storm and with that usually means no power. I am so lucky that I have a wood burning stove and my 68 year old husband can still prepare wood for the stove (chopping and splitting wood). So we will have heat. We have a well so no water when no power. I have plenty of jugs of water, but it goes so fast.
There are so few people in the world that realize their neighbors might be alone, or having health issues. We all need to lend a helping hand or a kind word. I just wish I was closer to you to help.
In lieu of physical help, I’m sending good karma and kind words.
Your gardening friend,
Carol
Thanks for always being such a source of gardening know-how and encouragement for us, Theresa. So sorry to hear about your troubles. I’m praying for you for healing, encouragement and safety in the cold weather ahead.
Theresa, I have kept an eye on your area as the forecasts come through. There’s been some shifting in regards to areas that will get significant ice. I pray you will be spared. We are now in the zone for freezing precipitation, but I am counting on grace and mercy to get us through. If we lose power, there will be horrible consequences since the VERY cold air is yet to get here. At least we have a wood stove in the basement and a supply of firewood. The heat doesn’t quite make it to the bedrooms upstairs but we have lots of quilts and some hand warmers.
I am so relieved to hear that you have someone to help with a few things around your place. I am concerned that your internet is so uncertain. I am feeling a little insecure with our service here as well. I hope you can post a message on Sunday or Monday to let us know how you fared!
HUGS!!!
Praying for your safety and improving health daily, as ever.
Don in Stafford here. You burn kerosene for heat? Me too! I have a large Perfection heater in the living room and a small Toyostove Rainbow-2 portable kerosene heater that my parents bought 40 years ago. Both burn Number One CLEAR kerosene. I found out years ago that the dyed kerosene will “gum up” everything.
I have plenty of fuel but I am dreading the cold. The older I get the harder it is.
Keeping you in prayer Theresa!
Theresa, thank you for this update. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Stay safe and warm! Gino & Giulia
Hello Theresa,
Sorry you’re having such a rough time. You’re in our prayers.
So sorry to hear of your travails. Winter gloom doesn’t help to mitigate things does it? Now 6:36 Sat morning and the temp in Doswell VA–Kings Dominion area is 14 deg. and the wind is heavy. If the lights stay on I might actually get my inside work caught up…like ordering my seeds!
Take care and praying for your health to take a turn for the best.
Tish
I am praying for your needs to be met Theresa. I will be watching for an update. Thank you so much for letting us know of your situation.
Don in Stafford, Virginia. Thinking of you Mrs. Martz. I just now turned on my heat and have been trying to save kerosene. Tonight (Monday night 26th of January) will be rough for us Virginians! I made it through the ice and snow OK and hope you did the same.
Hello Theresa!
I pulled up some of my carrots that I left in the bed and they were delicious! so grateful for all your shared wisdom that enabled us to get our garden going.
